My career has spanned over 40 years as a Paramedic-Firefighter, Educator, husband and father. Beginning as an EMT with the City of Mulberry, Fl when they took over from the local funeral home. After a few months with the City, I then joined Polk County EMS. For the next 20 or so years I became the chief of Willow Oak Volunteer FD, began teaching at Polk Community College (PCC (now Polk State College)) and implemented and taught the first Health Science Program at Lake Gibson High School.
My next career adventure landed me at Bartow High School where I implemented the BHS Medical Academy. We implemented many firsts in the state, one being with students dual enrolled in Polk Community College EMT program. I also became a volunteer firefighter with Bartow Fire Department while still an adjunct instructor at PCC and Ridge Technical Fire programs. After a few years with BHS, I then left Polk County and headed to Santa Fe College (SFC) EMS programs in Gainesville.
I stayed with SFC for a few years as an Instructor and then wanted to try my hand at Program Director of EMS programs at Manatee Technical Institute (MTI) In Bradenton, FL. After three years as the Director, I found I liked the classroom more, so I went back to teaching at Santa Fe College till retirement in 2015.
During my career I have been involved with EMS and Fire Education both in the classroom and on committees working with state officials from Florida Department of Health EMS and Florida Department on Education, improving EMS and Health Sciences education state wide.
Currently still a member of FAEMSE monitoring the future of EMS education.
